Don’t Give Up: A Lesson from the Dance Floor

I recently had an experience in dance class that left a lasting impression on me, and I think it’s one many of us can relate to.

A woman walked in for the first time, clearly nervous. She told me she was intimidated and wasn’t sure if she’d be able to keep up. I gave her a warm smile and told her what I tell every beginner: You’re here, and that’s what matters most. We moved together through the warm-up, and for a moment, it felt like she was settling in.

But halfway through the class, I noticed she had stepped out. I assumed she needed a water break or a moment to collect herself. Unfortunately, she never came back.

That moment stuck with me.

Because how many times have we all almost done something new, something brave, something uncomfortable—and then backed away when it felt like too much?

Trying something unfamiliar can stir up fear, doubt, and even embarrassment. But it can also be the beginning of a transformation. And I want to speak directly to you, the one who’s teetering between giving up and giving it one more try:

Please don’t quit on yourself.

There is no shame in needing a break. There is no shame in stepping outside for air. But I urge you—come back in. Return to the hard thing. The uncomfortable thing. The thing that could change your life.

This is what I call Holistic Self-Defense. It's not just about protecting your body. It's about standing up for your dreams. Showing up for yourself. Defending your right to grow, evolve, and thrive.

If you’ve ever walked out of something hard, I understand. If you’re afraid of failing or looking silly, I’ve been there too. And if you’re ready to try again—I’m here to walk with you.
